In the News

The Waters of Batesville is piloting a new Nurse Practitioner (NP) program that will now benefit patients during both short- or long-term stays at this 86-bed skilled nursing facility, located at 958 E. Highway 46 -- the only skilled care facility in the Batesville area to offer this extra clinical support and intervention.

Shelly Eisert brings extensive experience and education to the Waters of Batesville as an educator, nurse clinician, and researcher. Her degrees include: Doctor of Education (Ed.D), Master of Science in Nursing (M.S.N.), Master of Health Administration (M.H.A), Registered Nurse (R.N.) and Family Nurse Practitioner (F.N.P.) and also holds the National League for Nursing's distinct credential, Certified Nurse Educator (C.N.E.). Additionally, she serves as a Captain in the U.S. Army reserve Nurse Corp.

"We are absolutely delighted to have Shelly working with us in her new capacity as nurse practitioner," said Stephanie Blevins, administrator at The Waters of Batesville. "She is very familiar with our facility having worked with us for 14 years in other positions while advancing her studies."

Across the country, placing nurse practitioners in skilled nursing facilities is a trend that's rapidly catching on. With advanced training beyond that of a registered nurse, these clinicians have the expertise to catch adverse symptoms early on before they progress into something far more serious that could send the patient back into the hospital again.

"There are so many benefits to having a nurse practitioner onboard," explained Blevins. "She's an instructor to our staff to help strengthen their clinical skills. She has also helped us work in even closer collaboration with the local hospital on new admissions, and with the ability to offer more services in-house."

Indeed, statistics show the following benefits of a nurse practitioner program:

Savings of Medicare Dollars

  • Improved quality measures for the facility as tracked by the Indiana Department of Public Health
  • Increased healthcare accessibility and faster response times for patients when their medical conditions change
  • Decreased hospital readmissions by as much as 30%, as reported by other states
  • Onsite clinical training to improve hands-on care and observational skills of existing nursing staff

"I work in close collaboration with the facility's medical director, Dr. Charles McGovern, on behalf of his patients," Eisert added. "Preventative care is key in the skilled setting. The ability to accurately assess a problem immediately means we can avoid a 9-1-1 transfer of that patient to the local ER which benefits not only our patients, but also their families – saving everyone additional stress." Aside from her civilian role at The Waters, she is a Captain in the United States Army Reserve Nurse Corp, and has participated in regional, national, and international military missions, including an overseas deployment to facilitate relations among nations and to administer humanitarian care.

Eisert's office is located near the front entrance of The Waters of Batesville. Patients, family and friends, and even community members are welcome and encouraged to stop by and meet with her.

Eisert sums it up this way...
"The nurse practitioner's role is very rewarding," she said. "We love not only seeing patients get better, but also to watch the facility's staff grow in confidence with their own assessment skills as we provide them with the ongoing education and support they need to do their jobs better each and every day."

For more than 40 years, The Waters of Batesville, has been offering the area quality skilled nursing and rehabilitative care through short-term rehabilitation, long-term care, outpatient therapies, and respite care.
